Bob Maltsbarger is a Senior Research Economist with the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri (FAPRI-MU). He joined FAPRI-MU in January 2022. His work is focused on the maintenance and development of cost of production modeling, specialty crop partial equilibrium modeling systems and farm income to support FAPRI-MU coverage for baseline and policy analysis.
In the private sector, he worked over 11 years with IHS Markit as a principal economist, where he developed and used global agricultural modeling systems to provide supply, demand, trade, and price projections and farm income outlooks for clients. On a bespoke basis he provided client specific scenario analysis including topics such as food waste and loss, climate variability, farm productivity and income, and dietary preference changes. During his time at IHS Markit, Dr. Maltsbarger developed multiple global partial equilibrium models of specialty crops and more than 140 processing food, fiber, feed, and beverage manufacturing cost models used by clients in the food value chain as a contract negotiating tool. He is a native of Missouri, where he grew up on a family farm that included a cow-calf operation, hay production and row crops. He holds a PhD in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Missouri and a MS and BS in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri.
